# Moorside: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

In Moorside, catching it before your motor runs normally means draining and a full flush on the spot.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the reasons it happens and the how to avoid it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the engine — but plenty of newer diesels seen around Moorside and Upper Fagley carry a second fluid as well.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in the gap that the slip lives.

## Moorside: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Moorside Avenue, or outside Wellington Hotel on the way home after work.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, carries on.

It's a few seconds, be it out in Haigh Fold or right in the centre of Moorside.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Lower Fagley or a forecourt around Moorside.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — plenty of motors show which belongs in which inlet just there.

- Cannot see it beside your diesel filler? Then check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask when you pick up a hire car or company car — from Bradford Forster Square's car park, say — rather than once the warning appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in West Yorkshire that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Musgrave Drive.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have located the filler and read it.

- The two behind a single flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel side is still closed before raising the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Moorside already?

Do not start your engine: that is where the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, right where fuel is taken from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Texaco or the Morrisons, ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the pump.

Your own drive in Moorside is where it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M606, under 5 miles from Moorside, that means the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Bradford, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Moorside.

## What occurs when our technicians arrive around Moorside

Outside Fagley Primary School, close to Bradford Industrial Museum or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Which liquid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since those answers decide the work and quote.

Nobody heads out until you've heard our price over the phone.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out unaided. Hence it counts more.

Once the fuel filter is flushed — or renewed, where required — fresh diesel goes in, and then the car is tested.

Before leaving, our technicians start the car and confirm that it is running properly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers get there, as long as your engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## About Moorside

Moorside is a suburban area situated on the outskirts of Bradford in West Yorkshire, with its riverside setting and elevation of around 189 metres. Moorside is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock and is located near other local areas such as Haigh Fold and Fagley. ## AdBlue drains about Moorside, and West Yorkshire beyond

Over BD postcodes, the vans covering Moorside — a residential suburb — work the nearby places too, Undercliffe and Fagley among them.

Quickest of all: give a BD2 3 postcode for the van.

There's no need to shift the vehicle.

We drain it where it is — a side street near St Clare, a lay-by on the way to Undercliffe Cricket Ground, a driveway.

Guessing won't help behind St Clares Community Centre, close to a boundary, or anywhere awkward to pin down; ring and ask.

## In short, for Moorside motorists

Before you pour, read the cap.

Even so AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel will empty it wherever it stands, wherever around West Yorkshire: keep it off and call 0333 366 0103.
