# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Morton: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the engine hasn't turned, it is emptied and thoroughly rinsed where your vehicle sits in Morton.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it happens and the ways to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Morton and Caldewgate carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to clean it, from its own tank.

There is a filler on every tank.

Other motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two together under one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Morton

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Orton Road before work, or in the car park at Jovial Sailor on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a strange vehicle.

No part stops the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Morton or out in Raffles.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Willow Holme or a forecourt around Morton, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — many cars show which belongs in each filler just there.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Carlisle.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light comes on — anywhere you are in Cumbria — a routine to follow.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Dunmail Drive.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never came off.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Morton already?

Short list, then. Top of it: the motor remains off.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The staff at Asda, Sainsbury's or any forecourt will normally help pushing the car clear if you ask.

If you're on your own drive around Morton, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Already run? Pull over once it's sensible, then turn off.

On the M6, under 3 miles from Morton, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Morton is a smaller job than a run towards Carlisle, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Morton, and what takes place next

The van reaches the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Morton Library, or by St Bede's Catholic Primary School.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because the replies decide the work and price.

During the call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of dispatch.

Then your tank is drained and your system purged thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

A test comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unrun cars mostly mean a half-hour visit from arrival. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

It is worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## AdBlue drains around Morton, and Cumbria beyond

Being a residential suburb, Morton shares its vans nearby areas — Longsowerby, Newtown — all the way across CA postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Quickest of all: give a CA2 7 postcode for our van.

The car does not need to shift.

Wherever it sits — beside Morton Manor Community Centre, in a layby en route to Chance's Park, on a drive — that's where it gets drained.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Raffles Community Church, ring and ask instead of assuming.
