# Moss Hey: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, keep the ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done just where the vehicle sits around Moss Hey, is normally all it takes when found before the engine runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels around Clough, as well as Moss Hey, run on two fluids; your engine gets just the diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Moss Hey

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Farrow Street East, or outside Blue Bell on the way home that evening.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and after the tip begins, no part stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Moss Hey or out in Shaw.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Moss Hey forecourt or a driveway out in Small Brook, spend a couple of seconds on these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Rochdale, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — wherever it is around Greater Manchester — a routine to use.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Milne Street.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, confirm it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip slowly through its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Moss Hey: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Do not start the motor: that's where the short order of things begins.

Leave your ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on by itself starts your fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at Shell, Red Rose Filling Station or another forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing your car clear when asked.

Your own drive in Moss Hey is the place it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

The next exit is the place to leave if you are on the M62, under 3 miles from Moss Hey.

Distance matters — a short hop across Moss Hey makes a smaller job than driving under 10 miles towards Manchester — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when we arrive in Moss Hey

Anywhere your car has stopped, be it by East Crompton St James CofE Primary School, near Playhouse 2 or at home, our van travels to it.

What fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because those replies decide the work and price.

During the call itself, you hear the price — ahead of anything else.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, after the tank is drained.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, some metals corrode, and nothing washes out unaided, however long it is left.

After your filter is cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your car gets tested.

Next our technicians fire it up and check it runs correctly before we go.

Unrun vehicles mostly mean a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
