# Mosstodloch: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your motor off and keep your ignition off.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

As it is water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble just comes when the pump starts pulling it.

Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Mosstodloch.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Mosstodloch: the first few minutes

To do:

- Take your keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not throw it out.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting IV32 7, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift your vehicle: the engine remains off.

- Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.

- No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it's pointless.

- Never drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short way down Dean Place.

- No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.

The attendants on duty at any Mosstodloch forecourt — the JET among them — will usually help rolling it clear if you ask.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains exactly as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

Stored in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

It drops, because it is heavier than diesel, and pools down where the pickup draws its supply from.

Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it waits underneath your diesel, and that is how a car topped up in Blackdam yesterday and not switched on remains the straightforward case, provided no one turns your key.

After it is drawn in, the damage takes two forms.

What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow passages and block filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it is flushed out.

A vehicle left sitting around Mosstodloch with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel running past them, and so the water content harms them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the another forecourt nearby, and this problem is thinned fuel.

Damage only comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting inside your tank, it does nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Fochabers or the middle of Mosstodloch.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Clearing a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere around Moray the car has stopped.

## Mosstodloch: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light.

A container bought when driving home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical route.

Usually, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is rushed.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Pinewood Road.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside the pub in the village, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

The least known vehicles see it the most — hire cars, brand-new ones, company ones, and the other vehicle of a home with one of each fuel types.

Anywhere in Moray, Mosstodloch as well, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: keep it off.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Mosstodloch?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

It's been pulled through your filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Expect rough running, exhaust smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Balnacoul Wood, say, or midway across Mosstodloch.

When safe, stop and switch everything off — with no turning it on again to see.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Mosstodloch lies over 50 miles from the M90; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and stop safely rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Mosstodloch to the car park by Speymouth War Memorial is a very different job from a run towards Inverness, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to clean out once the motor has been run, and our technicians do all of it where your car has stopped.

If it's spotted soon, permanent damage is very rare.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Mosstodloch?

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Mosstodloch: a side street near Captain G P Stronach G.C. Memorial, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three replies decide the job, so before anything else we ask which fluid went in, roughly what quantity, plus whether your engine has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one after the tank is drained, on the spot.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is cleaned right through since residue won't wash away unaided.

A test of your car follows at the end, once clean diesel goes in and the filter is cleaned or, if necessary, swapped.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding the fuel system with clean diesel comes at the end.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, at Elgin or on a drive around Mosstodloch.

The check before our technicians head off is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

No garage is required at any stage, with the whole job done on the spot.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## Mosstodloch: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No flat price could be fair, because each job is different.

Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the car, since an open driveway is easier for a technician to reach safely than a tight gap behind The Highlanders (Seaforths, Gordons & Camerons) Memorial.

That is why every call from Mosstodloch starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it's run.

Once they are answered, a range turns into one fixed number.

Our price is quoted during the call, before a van sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

While the van is travelling, dig out your insurance: many cover misfuelling.

## Mosstodloch: still beside the car?

Then, the best thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Mosstodloch or anywhere around Moray.
