# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Moulsham Green: How It Occurs and How to Prevent It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Moulsham Green.

Here before the event? Then the rest explains why it comes about and how to prevent it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many modern diesels around Yateley, as well as Moulsham Green, run on two fluids; your engine takes only your diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the gas.

There's a filler for every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Moulsham Green: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Moulsham Copse Lane, or heading home in the car park at The White Lion.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, keeps on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Moulsham Green or out in Eversley Cross.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Cricket Hill or a forecourt around Moulsham Green, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Sandhurst? Ask whoever drove it last before leaving, not once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever across Hampshire, use this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Blaire Park.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you have located the filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Moulsham Green?

Don't start the engine: that is how the short order of things begins.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where fuel is taken from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Texaco or the Esso, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

At home in Moulsham Green? So the car stays put.

When the engine has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn the vehicle off.

Moulsham Green lies under 5 miles from the M3; on it, use the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Moulsham Green is smaller work than a run of under 50 miles towards Winchester, and so say.

## Our arrival in Moulsham Green, and what happens next

By Westfields Infant School, near The Tythings or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

The answers settle the work and our quote, so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

That price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is drained and the system purged thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and nothing clears out on its own, however long it sits.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we leave, our engineers fire it up and check that it's running properly.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor hasn't run need about half an hour after our engineers arrive.

Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
