# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mount: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Leave your motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Around Mount, catching it before the motor turns normally means a drain and a thorough flush on the spot.

Here in advance? Then the rest covers how it happens and what to prevent it happening at all.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads about Mount and Salendine Nook carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray cleans the fumes.

There is a filler for every tank.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what filler to use.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens in Mount

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Shannon Drive before work, or in the car park outside The Wappy Spring on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and once it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as easily, and after the tip starts, no part stops it.

Whether it occurs in Upper Hirst or the middle of Mount, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt around Mount or a drive out in Longwood Edge. A few seconds, that's all.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- On many vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Slaithwaite, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in West Yorkshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Roman Close, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and look again that your diesel cap never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Do not go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Mount already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition goes on — so leave it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

The attendants at BP, Scientific Lubricants or any forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the car clear if asked.

At home around Mount? Then the vehicle remains where it is.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M62 — under a mile out of Mount — at the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Mount.

## What happens when our engineers get there around Mount

Anywhere the car came to rest, whether by Moorlands Primary School, beside Salendine Nook Baptist Church or at home, the van travels to it.

Those replies determine this work and our quote, so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run.

On the phone call itself, you are told the quote — ahead of dispatch.

Then the tank is emptied and your system rinsed thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. That is why it matters more.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor hasn't run take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains about Mount, and West Yorkshire beyond

Lower Hirst and Snow Lea are among the places near Mount, a residential suburb, that the same teams cover, throughout HD postcodes.

The van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting HD3 3.

Shifting the car isn't needed.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Haigh Cross, a lay-by on the way to Hirst Wood, a drive.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of St Mary Magdalene's Church.

## The short version for Mount drivers

Pour nothing until you've read the cap.
