# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mountain Air? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, keep the engine off and keep your ignition off.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

The trouble begins once it is pulled through your lines — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and carefully purged where your car stands in Mountain Air.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Mountain Air

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Which fluid, and about how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers can know.

- The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting NP23 6, or simply the name of a street nearby, so phone from the car.

Do not do these:

- Shifting your car even a short way is no reason to start the engine.

- Switching your key to ignition alone starts your pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not thin it.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way down Llys Onnen.

- Emptying the tank yourself by the road is not worth trying.

The staff on duty at any Mountain Air forecourt — the Tesco among them — will usually lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask.

On the drive, the car remains just where it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

It does not combine. After it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel.

Denser than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the very place the intake draws from.

A car filled on a drive in Pont-y-Gof overnight and left unstarted is the straightforward one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though when the motor runs, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and block filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it's flushed out.

Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage overnight for a vehicle sitting in Mountain Air. Only in that tank, it stays stable.

And there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is commonly worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Gulf's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that is the whole issue.

Mixed through your diesel and left unused, it is no threat at that stage; running the engine does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It doesn't burn, so it cannot just be run through.

Deposits and corrosion stay after the following fill, and AdBlue separates again from the diesel, so thinning it can't work. Hence the flush matters more, and trying your engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Sirhowy or the heart of Mountain Air alike.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and that tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Blaenau Gwent the vehicle is sitting.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Mountain Air: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles rests right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A container picked up when heading home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical story.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent refills the vehicle.

Near Wordsworth Close, a driver pours a container in at home after work.

Else, after dark by The Picture House, your car is topped up by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

Rented vehicles, new vehicles, fleet cars, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles see it the most.

Leave it off: that is the first step to an identical slip, wherever around Mountain Air or the rest of Blaenau Gwent you are.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Mountain Air, and the engine started?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Through your filter, along the lines, and — with any running time — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is how far it has gone.

You may see the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Sirhowy Hill Woodlands Nature Reserve or halfway across Mountain Air.

Pull over when safe. Turn off. Keep the car off rather than restarting it to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M4, under 25 miles from Mountain Air, at the first junction and stop safely, not carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further in. That's why a hop across Mountain Air to park beside Aneurin Bevan Memorial Stones and a drive of under 25 miles for Newport are such separate jobs.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to flush once the motor has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has come to a stop.

Spotted quickly, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Mountain Air?

A street beside Ebbw Vale Shopping Centre, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever your vehicle has come to rest around Mountain Air, our technicians come to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether the engine has run, because those answers determine the work.

Next, emptying the tank right there removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together.

A full flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue will not wash away on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when the engine has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The last step is to prime your system on new diesel.

Starting the car comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, outside Ebbw Vale Town or on a driveway in Mountain Air.

Before leaving, our technicians make sure it is running properly with new diesel in.

Our technicians do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a garage.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Mountain Air: the cost of fixing it

Because the callouts vary, a flat figure wouldn't be fair.

The price moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Ebbw Vale Library.

Which fluid got in, how much, and whether it ran: each Mountain Air call begins with precisely that, ahead of a quote, never after.

Those replies shrink the range down to one number.

Before anyone sets off, you hear our quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your insurance while we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## Mountain Air: still next to the car?
