# Much Hoole: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave the engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before your engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Much Hoole.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many current diesels on the roads round Much Hoole and Much Hoole Moss Houses carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Plenty of motors share a single flap for the two, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Much Hoole

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Smithy Lane, or on the way home in the car park outside The Smithy Inn.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as readily, and after the pour starts, nothing stops it.

Whether it takes place in Goose Green or the middle of Much Hoole, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these first, at a forecourt in Much Hoole or a drive over in Little Hoole Moss Houses. A few seconds, that's all.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and look for a label — plenty of cars show what belongs in each inlet just there.

- The handbook shows which it is if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Croston, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the light appears — wherever you are across Lancashire — a simple routine to follow.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Liverpool Old Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Stop once your tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently using the own spout.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Much Hoole: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Short order, then. Top of that: the motor stays unstarted.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the base rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is pulled from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Suthers Star Garage or the Shell, ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Much Hoole.

Where your engine has run already, stop safely then turn it off.

Come off the M6 — under 10 miles out of Much Hoole — at the first junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Preston, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Much Hoole.

## What takes place when our technicians turn up in Much Hoole

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, near St Michael's and All Angels Church, or by Hoole St Michael CofE Primary School.

We ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it has run, because the replies decide this work and the price.

No one sets off before you've heard our quote by phone.

Then the tank is cleared and the system flushed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Your engine is fired up next and tested to make sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians leave.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our technicians get there, provided your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

Give a postcode that starts PR4 4, and our van arrives quickest.

Shifting the vehicle isn't necessary.

The drain happens right there, be it a driveway, a road near Walmer Bridge Village Hall, or a layby towards Much Hoole Vilage Hall & Leisure Park.

Awkward to explain, like the back of West Lancashire Light Railway? Close to a border? Checking is better than assuming, and so ring.

## Much Hoole people: the short version
