# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Mumbles

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing happens until the motor sucks it round.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Mumbles, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the engine has run.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Mumbles: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.

- Near moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- Which fluid, and roughly how much volume? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we will know.

- Give us a postcode starting SA3 4, or whichever street is nearest, and the van finds you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Do not:

- No starting the motor — not briefly, not to shift the car.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't weaken it.

- Even a short distance down Chapel Street is too far to drive the car.

- Don't try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move the car off the island if you are at a forecourt in Mumbles, whether it is the Newton Garage or somewhere else.

If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it stands.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, where it cleans the fumes.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays separate rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

A car filled on a driveway in Langland overnight and not started since counts as the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though once the engine runs, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

What remains when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny channels and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it is cleared out.

A vehicle left sitting in Mumbles with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

And there is the water: it offers no protection to the parts that rely on it most — the injection pump and each injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Texaco, and the problem is thinned fuel.

No harm comes as long as it stays put, blended into your diesel — only once the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Newton or the middle of Mumbles.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever across Swansea the vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue yet in the tank: the simplest part of a fuel system to empty.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Mumbles: how it ends up there

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind a single flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light.

Usually it is not the forecourt: a driver picks up a container driving home and pours it in at home.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is rushed.

A driver pours the bottle in outside their house, just off Newton Road, as the day ends.

Else, in dim light outside Mumbales, the vehicle is topped up by someone using that flap for the first time.

It crops up most in a hire car, a brand-new vehicle, a company motor, or the other motor in a home with one of each fuels — the vehicles people use least.

Keep it switched off: that's the first response to an identical slip, anywhere in Mumbles or the remainder of Swansea you happen to be.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Mumbles, and the engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

The filter and lines have had it sucked through, and any running time takes it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any may show up, maybe part way across Mumbles or coming back from Oystermouth Castle Wood.

When you safely can, pull over then turn everything off — without turning it on again to see.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the M4, under 10 miles from Mumbles, at the first junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Mumbles to the car park by Tabernacle Congregational Church is a very different job from a run towards Swansea, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile.

Let us know about how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the motor has been started.

When it's noticed soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## Mumbles: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A street beside Ostreme Community Centre, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: anywhere the vehicle has stopped in Mumbles, our engineers travel to it.

Three replies decide the job, so before anything else our engineers ask which fluid got in, about the amount, plus whether your engine has run.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out at once.

Residue from AdBlue won't wash away by itself, so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters far more here than for petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Finally, the system is primed with fresh diesel.

Starting the engine comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, at Swansea or on a drive in Mumbles.

It's tested on clean diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our technicians leave.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

Mumbles is located near other nearby places such as Oystermouth and Norton, and is approximately 4 miles from Swansea city centre.

## AdBlue drains across Mumbles and Swansea

Oystermouth, Thistleboon and Norton are among the towns around Mumbles that the same teams serve, together with much of Swansea further out, over the SA postcode area.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

No moving is needed. In Mumbles, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: the car is drained on the spot, whether on a drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## Mumbles: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Every job is different, and so not one fixed price would be fair.

The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Castleton Chapel.

What went in, how much, and whether it ran: every Mumbles enquiry opens with precisely those, ahead of a figure, not afterwards.

Once they are answered, a range becomes a single firm number.

Our price is given on the call, before a van sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.

## Still beside your car around Mumbles?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with the vehicle is to leave it.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Mumbles or anywhere in Swansea.
