# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Myrke

Pause reading for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor hasn't turned, it's emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle is around Myrke.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds your engine — but many current diesels driven about Myrke and Chalvey hold another fluid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Myrke?

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off The Myrke before work, or in the car park at The Red Cow on the way home.

Unfamiliar cars are second, too. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, keeps on.

It takes seconds, whether out in Upton Park or right in the centre of Myrke.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Myrke forecourt or a drive over in Eton, take a few seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Slough.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere you are around Berkshire — a simple routine to use.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor off, and not in a rush beside M4 at the roadside.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have found the filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Stop when your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently using its own spout.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Myrke: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Short order, then. First: your motor remains unstarted.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at Tesco, Esso or another forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the car away if asked.

If you're on your own driveway in Myrke, leave the vehicle where it is.

When the motor has run already, stop safely and turn the car off.

The next junction is the place to leave when you are on the M4, under a mile from Myrke.

A short hop across Myrke is a smaller job than a run towards Westminster, under 25 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we get there in Myrke, what happens?

The van reaches the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, beside St Laurence Church, or outside St Mary's Church of England Primary School.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since the replies decide this work and our quote.

You get that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

## AdBlue drains about Myrke, and Berkshire beyond

Throughout SL postcodes, our vans covering Myrke — a village — work the nearby places too, Slough and Upton included.

Fastest of all: quote a SL3 9 postcode to our van.

No need to shift the vehicle.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Seventh Day Adventist Church, a lay-by on the way to Herschel Park, a drive.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of St Andrew's Methodist Church, ring and ask instead of assuming.

## For Myrke drivers, the short version

Pour nothing till you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave the car off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere across Berkshire.
