# Nab: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down for now, keep the ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your motor hasn't turned, it's emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle sits in Nab.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it does not — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels in Kitson Hill, as well as Nab, run on two fluids; the engine takes just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on every tank.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both together under one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Nab

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Monkfield before work, or in the car park outside Wilsons Arms on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: a strange car.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as readily, and once the tip begins, no part halts it.

Whether it occurs in Battyeford or the middle of Nab, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Knowl or a forecourt around Nab, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it lives when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Mirfield? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the warning appears — wherever you are in West Yorkshire — a routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of The Nab.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you've located the filler and read it.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop once that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently using its own spout.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Nab: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short list, then. Top of it: your engine remains unstarted.

Keep your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it alone runs the pump.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Esso, ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the pump.

Your own driveway around Nab is where it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

Nab lies under 3 miles from the M62; on it, use the next junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing Nab is less a job than a trip of under 10 miles towards Bradford, so tell us.

## Our arrival in Nab, and what occurs next

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, be it outside Battyeford CofE (VC) Primary School, beside Church of the Resurrection or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since the replies decide this work and the quote.

That quote is given on the call, before any van leaves.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is emptied.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears away unaided. Hence it counts more.

Once the filter has been flushed — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally the car is tested.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Unstarted vehicles mostly need a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
