# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Nancenoy? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and the ignition as well.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

The trouble begins once it is sucked through the lines — it will not ignite, and it won't combine with diesel.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly flushed where your car sits in Nancenoy.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Your next steps straight away, Nancenoy: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

- Remove the keys, and that prevents anyone turning the power on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are at all near moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the quantity, and so don't bin it away.

- Tell us a postcode starting TR11 5, or whatever street is nearest, and our van reaches you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll the vehicle: your engine stays off.

- Switching the key to ignition by itself sets your pump going on many diesels. Skip it.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not thin it.

- Keep it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way along Penwartha Close.

- Don't try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

Get the attendants to help you move the car away from the pumps if you are at a forecourt around Nancenoy, whether it is the Gulf or elsewhere.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, where it treats the gas.

No part in an injection pump is made for this fluid — and no part of it was intended to go that way.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

A vehicle topped up on a drive in Comfort overnight and left unstarted is the simple case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up yet — though when the engine turns, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the components it gets to for as long as it stays there.

A vehicle left sitting in Nancenoy with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives none of that, and that is a separate kind of harm.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Asda, and this problem is thinned fuel.

No damage comes while it stays unused, blended into your diesel — only when the motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It doesn't burn, so it cannot just be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, since it separates back out — and the next tankful will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Nancenoy or out in Ponjeravah, costs more than nearly any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Cornwall the car is sitting.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Nancenoy

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars sits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It mostly occurs at home, from a bottle grabbed en route home, rather than at the filling station.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

Hurrying, outside Constantine Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone tops up your car.

Someone pours the bottle in at home, right off Penbothidno, as the day ends.

Otherwise, after dark by Trengilly Wartha Inn, your car gets refilled by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It takes place most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Keep it switched off: that's the first response to an identical slip, anywhere around Nancenoy or the rest of Cornwall you are.

## Nancenoy: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Your filter and lines have had it sucked through, and any running time carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each may show up, maybe midway across Nancenoy or returning from Scott's Wood.

No restarting to test: stop when safe, then turn everything off.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M5, over 50 miles from Nancenoy, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

A quick hop across Nancenoy to the car park by Settlement is one matter; driving towards Truro, under 15 miles away, is another, because every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the engine has been started.

Noticed soon, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

## Nancenoy: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Wherever it has stopped in Nancenoy — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a road by Constantine Museum and Archive — our van travels to your car.

Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if the motor has run, because those replies determine this work.

Next, draining the tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Testing the car follows at the end, after fresh diesel goes in and your filter gets cleaned or, if necessary, replaced.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Priming your system with clean diesel comes at the end.

Starting it comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, by Penmere or on a driveway in Nancenoy.

Our technicians make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel before leaving.

No workshop is needed at any stage, with the whole job done then and there.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

## Nancenoy and Cornwall: AdBlue drains across the area

Our vans that answer AdBlue jobs around Nancenoy also cover the places around it, Polwheveral, Constantine and Polpenwith among them, and most of Cornwall beyond, across the TR postcode area.

Phone and ask instead of guessing when you're close to a border, or anywhere tricky to pin down.

No towing is needed. In Nancenoy, a coastal area, a van that comes to you fits: the car is emptied where it stands, whether on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## Nancenoy: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Every job differs, and so no single price is honest.

Three things shift the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind St Constantine.

With that reason, every enquiry from Nancenoy opens with the same trio — which fluid got in, what quantity, if it ran — ahead of any quote.

Given them, the range narrows to a single fixed number.

Before a van heads out, you hear the quote by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is travelling, check your insurance: many include misfuelling.

## Nancenoy: still alongside your car?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, right now, the most useful thing open to you.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Nancenoy or anywhere around Cornwall.
