# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Nether Hall

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Nether Hall.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the reasons it happens and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads round Nether Hall and Humberstone carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on every tank.

Many of motors share a single flap for both, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Nether Hall: how it occurs

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Barry Road, or heading home in the car park at The White House.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Nether Hall or out in Humberstone Garden.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Thurnby or a forecourt in Nether Hall.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- On many vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors show what goes in which inlet right there.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Leicester? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, not when the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever it is around Leicestershire — a routine to follow.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Greenbank Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, but it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look again — confirm the diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Nether Hall already?

Brief list, then. First: your motor stays unstarted.

Keep your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it by itself starts the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

The attendants at Tesco, Esso or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the vehicle clear when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Nether Hall.

When your engine has been run already, pull over somewhere safe and turn the car off.

Come off the M1 — under 10 miles out of Nether Hall — at the first junction.

A short hop across Nether Hall is a smaller job than a run towards Leicester, under 5 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Nether Hall: what occurs when our engineers arrive

By Scraptoft Valley Primary School, near Netherhall Library or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

The answers decide the work and the quote, so our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

During the phone call itself, you are told the price — ahead of anything else.

Then the tank is cleared and the system rinsed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

After the fuel filter is flushed — or renewed, where required — clean diesel goes in, and then the car gets tested.

Then our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs properly before we leave.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

It is worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
