# Netherfield: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop here a minute if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done right where your car sits around Netherfield, is normally all it needs when found before the engine runs.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to ensure it does not — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many newer diesels on the roads about Netherfield and Tinkers Bridge carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

There is a filler on every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel gets filled at each filling station call-out, week in, week out.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Netherfield

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Buckland Drive before work, or in the car park at Ye Olde Swan on the way home.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

Third, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and once the tip starts, no part stops it.

It takes seconds, be it in Ashland or right in the centre of Netherfield.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Netherfield forecourt or a driveway over in Coffee Hall, take a few seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel inlet? In that case check below the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- The previous driver will know. Check as you collect a rental or company car — at Fenny Stratford's car park, say — rather than when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere in Buckinghamshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Wastel, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went in the wrong tank? That is where you stop.

Do not go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Netherfield?

Don't start your engine: that's where the short order of things starts.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Asda, ask the staff to help push your car away from the petrol pump.

At home in Netherfield? Then your car stays put.

When the engine has been run already, pull over somewhere safe then turn the vehicle off.

The next junction means the place to come off when you are on the M1, under 5 miles from Netherfield.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Milton Keynes, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Netherfield.

## Our arrival in Netherfield, and what happens next

Outside Moorland Primary School, near Netherfield Chapel or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Both the work and our price depend on three replies — what fluid, which quantity, and if it's run — so we ask.

Nobody sets off before you have had our quote over the phone.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle.

Next our engineers start the car and check it runs correctly before leaving.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains across Buckinghamshire, Netherfield included

Netherfield is a residential suburb, and the vans that cover it also work the places near it, Beanhill and Wroughton Park among them, across the MK postcode area.

Quote a postcode that starts MK6 4, and the van gets there fastest.

There's no need to shift the car.

The drain happens right there, whether a drive, a road near Moorlands Family Centre, or a lay-by towards Canal Broadwalk.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

## The short version for Netherfield motorists

Before you pour, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave the car off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it sits, anywhere around Buckinghamshire.
