# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Netherfield: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, leave your ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

In Netherfield, catching it before the engine runs normally means draining and a full flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels in Holme Pierrepont, as well as Netherfield, carry on two liquids; the motor gets only the diesel.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It is in the gap that the mistake lives.

## Netherfield: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Forester Street, perhaps at Inn the Bank on the way home after work.

New-to-you cars are next, too. Rentals, new cars and company motors put their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as easily, and once the pour starts, no part halts it.

Whether it happens in Carlton or the middle of Netherfield, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Netherfield or a driveway over in Gedling. A few seconds, that's all.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many vehicles mark what goes in which inlet right there.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Carlton.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Nottinghamshire that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Victoria Road.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've found the filler and read it.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look again — confirm the diesel cap stayed shut throughout. After that, start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Netherfield?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

Diluting it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Sainsbury's or the Morrisons, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the pump.

On your own drive in Netherfield? So the vehicle stays where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

On the M1, under 10 miles from Netherfield, that means the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Netherfield is smaller work than a run of under 5 miles towards Nottingham, so tell us.

## Netherfield: what happens when our engineers arrive

The van reaches your car wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside St George the Martyr, or outside Netherfield Primary School.

Those replies settle this work and our price, so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

That price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears away by itself. Hence it matters more.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

The motor is fired up next and checked to confirm it runs correctly, all before we go.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor hasn't run take about half an hour once we are there.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

## About Netherfield itself

Netherfield is a suburban area in Nottinghamshire, situated on the banks of the River Trent at an elevation of around 25 metres. Netherfield lies close to the city of Nottingham, approximately 3 miles from the city centre, and is near other local places such as Carlton and Colwick. Netherfield has a population of around 6807 people and is characterised by its predominantly terraced housing stock.

## AdBlue drains across Nottinghamshire, Netherfield included

Colwick and Bakers Fields are among the places near Netherfield, a residential suburb, that the same vans cover, throughout NG postcodes.

The van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting NG4 2.

The vehicle does not need to shift.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Bethesda Ministries, a lay-by on the way to Jackie Bell’s Field, a driveway.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Netherfield Baptist Church.

## The short version for Netherfield drivers

Pour no AdBlue until you have read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it waits, anywhere across Nottinghamshire.
