# Nethergate: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause reading a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Nethergate, catching it before your engine turns normally means a drain and a full flush where it stands.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the why it takes place and the how to prevent it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of current diesels on the roads round Nethergate and Under Tofts carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

There is a filler for each tank.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two side by side under one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think which filler it needs.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Nethergate: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

On a driveway off Oldfield Road before work, or in the car park at The Crown & Glove heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and once it's gone, limp mode follows.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

No part halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Knowle Top or the heart of Nethergate: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Check these first, on a forecourt in Nethergate or a driveway out in Park Head. A few seconds, that's all.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- On many vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Sheffield? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Wherever across South Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of School Lane.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then check once more — confirm your diesel filler remained closed the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Nethergate?

Brief order, then. Top of it: your motor stays off.

Leave your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it by itself runs your fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — Esso, JET or another — the staff will usually help push your car clear, if you ask.

Your own drive around Nethergate is where it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Nethergate lies under 10 miles from the M1; there, use the first exit.

Distance matters — a short hop across Nethergate makes a smaller job than driving under 5 miles towards Sheffield — so say about how far it went.

## What takes place when we arrive in Nethergate

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether outside Stannington Infant School, beside Christ Church Church Hall or at home, our van travels to it.

Our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run, because the answers decide the work and the price.

During the call itself, you are told the quote — ahead of dispatch.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

After that we start the car and check it runs correctly before we leave.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

Moving the vehicle isn't necessary.

Wherever it stands — near Christ Church Stannington, on a lay-by en route to Stannington Park, on a drive — that is where it gets emptied.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Stannington War Memorial.
