# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in New Elgin? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and your ignition as well.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

Being water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts once your pump starts pulling it.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly flushed where your car stands around New Elgin.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in New Elgin: the first few minutes

Do:

- Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.

- Put the hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- Which fluid, and roughly how much volume? Hang on to the bottle or your receipt, and we can know.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting IV30 6, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Do not:

- Don't start the engine, even for a moment to shift the car.

- The ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start the fuel pump.

- Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out rather than thinning.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short distance along New Elgin Road.

- Beside the road, don't try emptying it on your own.

The attendants working at any New Elgin forecourt — the Asda among them — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to travel through one.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps apart instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

A car filled on a drive in Moss of Barmuckity yesterday evening and not started since is the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but when your motor turns, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny channels and block filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it is cleared out.

Pipes holding AdBlue spell harm overnight for a car parked in New Elgin. Only inside the tank, it stays stable.

The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Esso, and this issue is diluted fuel.

Blended through your diesel and sitting still, it's no threat at that stage; running your engine does the damage.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Pittendreich or the middle of New Elgin.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Not run? Then the AdBlue waits just inside your tank, the simplest bit of the entire system to clear, anywhere your vehicle has come to rest around Moray.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in New Elgin: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap — may look the same. No one intends it; many layouts invite it.

Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside the local primary school.

Near Linkwood Road, a driver pours a container in on the drive after work.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at Caberfeidh Bar, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

Rented cars, brand-new motors, fleet vehicles, or the second vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it the most.

Leave it off: that's the first response to an identical slip, wherever around New Elgin or the rest of Moray you are.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around New Elgin?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, after passing via the filter and pipework.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a stall — returning from Convent Rose Garden, perhaps, or part way across New Elgin.

Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the car off instead of restarting it to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M90, over 50 miles from New Elgin, by the first junction and park safely, not driving on.

Hopping across New Elgin to the car park by Elgin Parish Church is one thing; heading towards Inverness, under 50 miles away, is another, since every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance counts.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the motor has been running.

Caught early, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around New Elgin?

The car remains put, whether that is a street beside War Memorial, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station around New Elgin, and our van comes to it.

What was put in, roughly how much, and if your motor has been run: our engineers ask before all else, because those decide the job.

Next, draining your tank right there takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go.

A full flush matters far more after AdBlue than after petrol, because what remains won't wash away by itself.

Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the car is tested.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The final step is to bleed the fuel system on new diesel.

At that point our technicians fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space by Elgin or a driveway around New Elgin.

The check before our engineers head off is that it runs correctly on clean diesel.

No garage is required at any point, with the entire job done then and there.

Afterwards, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of guessing.

No towing is needed. In New Elgin, a residential suburb, a mobile service works: the vehicle is drained where it stands, be it on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around New Elgin?

Because the callouts vary, a flat figure wouldn't be honest.

Three things change the price: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Elgin Tennis Club.

That's why every call from New Elgin starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it's run.

Once they are answered, a range becomes a single firm figure.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## Still alongside your car in New Elgin?

In that case, touch nothing — that is the most helpful step there is.

Say it's AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel takes over, across New Elgin or wherever within Moray.
