# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in New Gate: How It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the motor has not run, it's drained and thoroughly flushed where your car is around New Gate.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel feeds your motor — yet many current diesels driven round New Gate and Under Bank carry another liquid as well.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both together behind one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs around New Gate

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off New Laithe Lane before work, or in the car park outside Gonzo on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second factor: a new motor.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, carries on.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Cliff or right in the heart of New Gate.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a New Gate forecourt or a driveway over in New Town, spend a few seconds over these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- On plenty of vehicles, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a rental or fleet car — at Brockholes's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Yorkshire that is.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of South Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Both behind one flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel side stays shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, then look again — confirm your diesel filler remained closed throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Skip stage five altogether.

## New Gate: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief order, then. Top of that: your engine stays off.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Murco, Texaco or another forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the vehicle away when you ask.

On your own drive in New Gate? Then the car remains put.

Where the engine has run already, pull over safely and switch the vehicle off.

Leave the M62 — under 10 miles out of New Gate — at the next junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across New Gate is smaller a job than a trip of under 15 miles to Wakefield, so tell us.

## Our arrival in New Gate, and what takes place next

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Holmfirth Junior Infant and Nursery School, close to Phoenix Community Centre or on your own drive.

Our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because the answers decide the work and the price.

The price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, once the tank is cleared.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out by itself. Hence it matters more.

Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

Next we start it and check it runs properly before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our engineers arrive, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.

There's no need to shift your car.

The drain happens on the spot, whether a driveway, a road near Sid's Cafe, or a layby on the way to Cinderhills Park.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Holy Trinity? Close to a border? Checking is better than assuming, and so ring.
