# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in New Langholm: Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It

Stop here for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where the car sits around New Langholm, is usually what it takes if found before the motor runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

No single liquid but two: that is what many modern diesels near New Langholm and Hollows carry, with diesel feeding the motor.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to fresh them, from its own tank.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both together behind one flap.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what filler it needs.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## New Langholm: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

On a driveway off B7068 before work, or in the car park at Crown Hotel on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.

New-to-you vehicles are second, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Langholm or the middle of New Langholm, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Ewes or a forecourt around New Langholm.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- On plenty of motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many vehicles show what goes in which filler right there.

- The handbook shows which it lives if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Gretna Green, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Dumfries and Galloway that is.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Caroline Street.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out step five entirely.

## New Langholm: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short order, then. First: your motor remains off.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Gulf or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump.

If you're on your own driveway in New Langholm, leave the vehicle where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next exit means where to come off when you are on the A74(M), under 10 miles from New Langholm.

Mileage matters — a short hop across New Langholm is a smaller job than driving under 25 miles to Carlisle — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we turn up in New Langholm, what takes place?

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, be it by the local primary school, near War Memorial or at home, the van travels to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since the replies decide this work and our price.

The price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is drained.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. That is why it matters more.

The filter cleaned or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a check of your vehicle.

Before we go, our technicians fire it up and check that it's running properly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we get there, as long as the engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
