# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in New Osney? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, keep your motor off then leave your ignition off.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the system draws it in.

If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly purged where your car stands in New Osney.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around New Osney: the first few minutes

Do these:

- Remove your keys, and that prevents someone turning the power on.

- If you're at all close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.

- Ring right where you are. Say a OX1 1 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

- Do not start your motor, even for a moment to shift the car.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not weaken it.

- Never drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Barrett Street.

- No draining it yourself, either, at the roadside.

Rolling your car off the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever New Osney forecourt you are on, the BP or any other.

On your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Oxford last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

It attacks some metals found in fuel components, working on any part it reaches until it's removed from your system. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in tiny passages.

Where the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting overnight in New Osney leaves things worse. In that tank only, waiting costs nothing.

Then there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have a problem of thin fuel.

Damage only comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and left inside that tank, it causes none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one.

Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Crystals and corrosion stay through the next fill, and AdBlue splits again from the diesel, and so thinning it can't help. Hence the flush counts so much, and trying the engine "to see" costs more here than almost any other slip — in North Hinksey Village or the centre of New Osney equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever across Oxfordshire the car has come to rest, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue still in the tank: the easiest bit of a fuel system to empty.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around New Osney?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors waits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Usually it's not the filling station: someone picks up a bottle driving home and tips it in at home.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside West Oxford Community Primary School.

Near Osney Lane, a driver tips a container in on the drive in the evening.

Otherwise, after dark outside The Porterhouse, your vehicle is topped up by someone using that flap for the first time.

It happens most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Leave it switched off: that's the first step to an identical mistake, anywhere in New Osney or the rest of Oxfordshire you are.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around New Osney, and the motor started?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

It has been sucked through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Oxpens Meadow or halfway across New Osney.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the Wheatley Spur, under 10 miles from New Osney, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system. That is why a hop across New Osney to park near St Thomas the Martyr and a drive of under a mile for Oxford are such different jobs.

Let us know about how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the motor has been started.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it's caught quickly.

## New Osney: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Anywhere it has stopped in New Osney — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a road by The First Superconducting Magnet for MRI Scanning — our van comes to your vehicle.

Which fluid got in, roughly the quantity, plus whether the motor has turned over: our engineers check before all else, because those decide the job.

Then your tank is cleared where the vehicle stands, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush matters far more with AdBlue than after petrol, since what remains won't clear away by itself.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Engine not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Bleeding the system with new diesel comes at the end.

Whether it is a parking bay outside Oxford or a driveway in New Osney, that is where we start the car and you head off.

The check before our technicians head off is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## AdBlue drains across Oxfordshire, New Osney included

Throughout the OX postcode area, the vans answering AdBlue jobs around New Osney reach most of Oxfordshire as well, Osney, New Botley and Jericho among them.

Close to a border, or somewhere tricky to explain? Asking beats assuming, so ring.

Wherever your car stands — your drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — we empty it there, with no need to bring it to us; which suits New Osney, a residential suburb, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in New Osney?

Every job differs, so not one fixed quote would be honest.

Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open drive is easier for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind St Frideswide's Church.

What was put in, how much, and if the engine ran: each New Osney call begins by asking precisely those, ahead of a quote, never afterwards.

The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

The price is quoted on the call, before anyone sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is travelling, check your policy: many include misfuelling.

## Still alongside the vehicle in New Osney?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with your vehicle is to leave it.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, across New Osney or anywhere within Oxfordshire, once you phone 0333 366 0103 to say it was AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and whether the engine ran.
