# New Town: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

In New Town, catching it before your motor turns normally means draining and a full flush where it stands.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels on the roads about New Town and Willesborough carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for each tank.

Many of cars share a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think what cap to use.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around New Town?

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Newtown Road, or at Alfred Arms on the way home that evening.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Nothing halts the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's seconds, whether in South Willesborough or bang in the centre of New Town.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Ashford or a forecourt in New Town.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and check for a label — many vehicles mark what goes in each inlet just there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Ashford International, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Kent that is.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Alfred Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Finish when that tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour slowly using the built-in spout.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and look again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Discover at the second or third step that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## New Town: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the Esso, ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

At home around New Town? Then the car remains where it is.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

New Town lies under a mile from the M20; there, use the next exit.

A short hop across New Town is a smaller job than a run towards Canterbury, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in New Town, and what takes place next

Wherever your car came to rest, whether outside East Stour Primary School, beside The Swan Centre or at home, the van comes to it.

What fluid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since the replies set both work and quote.

No one heads out before you have had the price over the phone.

Then the tank is cleared and the system cleaned thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle.

Then our engineers start it and check it runs properly before we leave.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
