# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in New Town? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave your engine off then keep the ignition off.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

Being water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes when the pump starts drawing it.

Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in New Town.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around New Town

To do:

- Remove your keys, and that prevents someone turning the electrics on.

- Put your hazards on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.

- The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting DY4 7, or just the name of a street nearby, so call from the spot.

Not to do:

- Don't start your engine, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Many diesels run their pump the moment the ignition comes on, so keep the car off.

- Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.

- Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Farley Street.

- Emptying that tank on your own beside the road is not one to try.

The attendants working at any New Town filling station — the Applegreen among them — will usually lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask.

If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle exactly where it sits.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the gas.

Nothing inside a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and none of it was meant to travel through one.

It does not blend. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Swan Village overnight and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue waits at the base of the tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through once the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow passages; and, because it attacks some metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

By daybreak, a vehicle parked in New Town with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; if it's just in the tank, it doesn't.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, and so the water content damages them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Asda, and the problem is diluted fuel.

No harm comes while it stays put, blended into the diesel — only once your motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot simply be run through, since it does not burn.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Horseley Heath or the middle of New Town.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Emptying a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever around West Midlands your vehicle has stopped.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in New Town: how it ends up there

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. Nobody intends it.

It usually occurs outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Newtown Primary School.

Near Dale Close, someone tips a bottle in on the drive in the evening.

Else, in dim light outside The Tame Bridge, your vehicle is topped up by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It happens most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Keep it switched off: that's the first step to an identical slip, wherever in New Town or the rest of West Midlands you happen to be.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in New Town, and your engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank.

Through your filter, along the pipework, and — with any running time — on to the injection pump and every injector: that is where it travels.

Perhaps coming back from Farley Park, or part way across New Town, your engine may go rough, smoke, drop pace, light up your dash or stall.

When you safely can, stop and switch it off — with no restarting to see.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the M5, under 3 miles from New Town, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Distance matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue further in, so heading for Wolverhampton, under 10 miles away, makes a much larger job than hopping across New Town to the car park by Great Bridge Library.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop.

Long-term damage is very uncommon if it's caught early.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in New Town

Wherever it has stopped around New Town — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a street by Radhasoami Satsang Dayalbagh Satsang Ghar (Birmingham Branch) — our van travels to your car.

Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run, since those replies determine the work.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out as one when that tank is drained, right there.

A careful flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, because residue will not wash out by itself.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Lastly, the system is bled with fresh diesel.

Whether it's a parking space at Dudley Port or a driveway in New Town, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off.

Before we leave, our technicians confirm it's running correctly with fresh diesel in.

The entire job is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About New Town

New Town is a suburban area situated on the lakeside in the West Midlands, with an elevation of around 134 metres. New Town lies approximately 5.9 miles from Wolverhampton and 107.3 miles from London, and is surrounded by nearby places such as Ryders Green, Great Bridge, and Greets Green. New Town has a population of around 4337 people and predominantly features semi-detached housing.

## New Town and West Midlands: AdBlue drains across the area

Ryders Green, Great Bridge and Greets Green are among the towns near New Town that the same vans reach, along with most of West Midlands beyond, throughout the DY postcode area.

Guessing doesn't help close to a county line or somewhere hard to describe; phone and ask.

New Town is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in New Town: the cost of fixing it

Not one single figure would be honest, because every job is different.

The price moves first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Parish Church of St Peter.

That is why each call from New Town starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

Given them, the range narrows to one fixed number.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

While the van is travelling, check your policy: many include misfuelling.

## New Town: still beside the vehicle?

Not touching the car is, right now, the best thing you can do.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around New Town or anywhere across West Midlands.
