# New Town: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around New Town.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

No single liquid but two: that's how many modern diesels near New Town and Springhill carry, with diesel for your engine.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around New Town?

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Chase Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Chase Inn.

Unfamiliar cars come second, as well. Hire cars, new cars and company motors put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it takes place in Brownhills or the middle of New Town, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Highfields or a forecourt in New Town, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Check for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Shenstone.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever in West Midlands, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of A5195, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Step five is off limits.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around New Town already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at the nearest petrol station, Esso or another forecourt will usually help to push the car clear when you ask.

If you are on your own driveway in New Town, leave it where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

The next junction is where to come off when you're on the M6 Toll, under a mile from New Town.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Lichfield, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across New Town.

## New Town: what occurs when we turn up

Anywhere your car came to rest, be it outside St Bernadette's Catholic Primary School, beside The Staffordshire Hoard (Anglo Saxon Treasure) or at home, the van travels to it.

Both the work and the price depend on three replies — what fluid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask.

No one heads out before you've had the price by phone.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of your system.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and nothing washes out unaided, no matter how long it is left.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## New Town and West Midlands: AdBlue drains across the area

Your car doesn't need to move.

The drain takes place on the spot, whether a driveway, a road near The Memo, or a layby on the way to Bradbury Park.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of St. James Church? By a border? Checking is better than assuming, so phone.
