# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in New Town: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around New Town.

Here before the event? In that case what follows explains why it comes about and what to stop it ever happening.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your motor — but many current diesels seen around New Town and Hill hold another fluid too.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Many of cars have a single flap for the two, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around New Town: how it takes place

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things coming up at once.

On a drive off Market Street before work, or in the car park at The Postcard on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and once it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a new vehicle.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once started, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of New Town or out in Holmfirth.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a New Town forecourt or a drive out in New Gate, take a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it lives when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Brockholes? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, not once the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, anywhere around West Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Town Hall Street, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both share a flap, confirm it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap never opened off.

Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the wrong tank? That is where you stop.

Stage five is out.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in New Town already?

Short list, then. First: the engine remains off.

Leave your ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on by itself runs your fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

On a forecourt — Murco, Texaco or any other — the attendants will usually help roll the car away, when you ask.

Your own driveway around New Town is the place it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the M62 — under 10 miles out of New Town — at the first exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across New Town is less work than a run of under 15 miles towards Wakefield, so tell us.

## When our technicians get there in New Town, what takes place?

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether outside Holmfirth Junior Infant and Nursery School, beside Holmfirth Civic Hall or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

What liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask since those replies decide the work and price.

No one heads out before you have heard the quote over the phone.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, after the tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

Filter cleaned or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of your car.

Your engine is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs correctly, all before we go.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.

## AdBlue drains across West Yorkshire, New Town included

Throughout HD postcodes, our teams that cover New Town — a residential suburb — work the surrounding places too, Cliff and Under Hill included.

A postcode starting HD9 3 gets the van to you fastest.

Moving your car is not necessary.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Holmfirth Methodist Church, a lay-by on the way to Holmeside Memorial Garden, a drive.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Maythorne Cross? Close to a county line? Asking beats assuming, so ring.

## The short version for New Town motorists

Always, the cap; then, the pour.

Still AdBlue in your diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can drain it wherever it is, wherever across West Yorkshire: switch the vehicle off and ring 0333 366 0103.
