# New York: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop here for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in New York.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the reasons it takes place and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads around New York and Kings Newton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

There is a filler for each tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

It's in that gap that the mistake happens.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in New York

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Selina Street before work, or in the car park outside Leddy's on the way home.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

It's seconds, whether in Melbourne or bang in the heart of New York.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt around New York or a driveway out in Wilson. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Peartree? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere it is across Derbyshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Moira Street.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you've located the filler and read it.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Skip stage five altogether.

## New York: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting the engine.

Keep the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it alone runs the pump.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Doves Garages Ltd or the John Smith Coal Merchant, ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around New York.

Already run? Stop once it is safe, then switch off.

The next exit is where to come off when you're on the M1, under 10 miles from New York.

A short hop across New York is a smaller job than a run towards Derby, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our technicians turn up in New York, what occurs?

Outside Melbourne Junior School, near Thomas Cook Memorial Hall or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since those answers decide the work and the price.

No one heads out before you've had the quote over the phone.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out unaided. That is why it matters more.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before we leave, our engineers start the car and confirm that it's running correctly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor hasn't run need about half an hour once our engineers are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.

## New York and Derbyshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout DE postcodes, the teams that cover New York — a residential suburb — work the nearby places too, Lilypool and Mount Pleasant included.

A postcode starting DE73 8 gets the van to you fastest.

The vehicle doesn't need to shift.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to The Coppice, a side street close to Assembly Rooms Library: our engineers drain the vehicle where it stands.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of United Reformed Church.

## For New York people, the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Keep the vehicle switched off and call 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, throughout Derbyshire.
