# New York: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, keep the ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your motor has not turned, it's drained and fully flushed where your vehicle sits around New York.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel goes to your engine — but plenty of modern diesels driven around New York and Holmes hold another fluid too.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to clean it, from its own tank.

There's a filler for every tank.

Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both together behind one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around New York

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Armer Street before work, or in the car park at The Riverside on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of New York or out in Thorn Hill.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in New York or a driveway out in Ickles. A few seconds, that's all.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Rotherham Central? Check with the person who drove the car last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are around South Yorkshire — a routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Brinsworth Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Finish when that tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently through the built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## New York: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

The staff at JET, Tesco or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the vehicle away if asked.

Your own drive in New York is the place it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next junction is the place to come off when you're on the M1, under 3 miles from New York.

Mileage matters — a short hop across New York makes a smaller job than driving under 10 miles to Sheffield — so say about how far it went.

## When our engineers arrive around New York, what happens?

The van reaches the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near AESSEAL New York Stadium, or by Ferham Primary School.

Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — which liquid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask.

During the phone call itself, you hear the price — before anything else.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is emptied.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and nothing clears out on its own, however long it is left.

The filter flushed or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of your car.

Your engine is started next and checked to make sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers go.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
