# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Newall: Why It Happens

Stop reading for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, carried out just where the car stands around Newall, is normally what it needs if found before the motor runs.

The remainder of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads around Newall and Clifton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

There's a filler on each tank.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for the two, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Newall: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Newall Carr Road before work, or in the car park at The Yew Tree on the way home.

Unfamiliar cars are next, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, carries on.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Otley or right in the centre of Newall.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Weston or a forecourt in Newall, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and check for a label — plenty of vehicles show which goes in each filler just there.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Menston.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

On the day the light appears — wherever you are in West Yorkshire — a simple routine to use.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Croft Avenue.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have found the filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, confirm it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is off limits.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Newall already?

Short order, then. First: the engine stays unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Chevin Service Station or the Tate Oil, ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the petrol pump.

On your own drive around Newall? So the vehicle remains where it is.

Already started? Stop once it is safe, then turn off.

Leave the Inner Ring Road — under 10 miles out of Newall — at the first exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Newall is less work than a run of under 10 miles to Bradford, and so say.

## What occurs when we get there in Newall

By Otley the Whartons Primary School, near Newall Old Hall or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Both the work and our price depend on three replies — which fluid, what quantity, and if it has run — so our engineers ask.

That price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out by itself. That is why it matters more.

Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

The engine is fired up next and checked to confirm it runs properly, all before our engineers head off.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Newall and West Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout LS postcodes, the vans covering Newall — a residential suburb — work the surrounding locations too, Knotford and Cambridge among them.

Quote a postcode beginning LS21 2, and our van gets there fastest.

Your car does not need to shift.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Bennett Court, a lay-by on the way to Tittybottle Park, a driveway.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Monument to the Printing Press, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## In short, for Newall drivers

First, the cap; after that, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere around West Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — so leave it off and call 0333 366 0103.
