# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Newark: Why It Happens

Stop here a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor has not turned, it's drained and thoroughly flushed where the car sits in Newark.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it occurs and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel feeds the motor — yet plenty of modern diesels driven around Newark and Fengate hold another liquid too.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

That gap is where the error lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Newark: how it happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Eye Road before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village on the way home.

New-to-you cars are second, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as easily, and after the tip starts, no part halts it.

Dogsthorpe or the heart of Newark: it is the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Paston or a forecourt in Newark, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is when your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Peterborough.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — wherever you are around Cambridgeshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor off, and never rushed by Barrowfield on the verge.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both share a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Newark: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Short order, then. First: the motor stays unstarted.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch it on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Esso, the Sainsbury's or somewhere else.

At home around Newark? So your car remains where it is.

When the motor has run by now, stop somewhere safe then switch the vehicle off.

The next exit means the place to leave when you're on the A1(M), under 10 miles from Newark.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Newark is a smaller job than heading under 3 miles towards Peterborough — so tell us about how far it went.

## When we get there around Newark, what happens?

Anywhere your car came to rest, be it outside Lime Academy Parnwell, beside Dogsthorpe Community Centre or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

We ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run, since the answers decide the work and the quote.

On the phone call itself, you are told our quote — before anything else.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, once your tank is emptied.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away by itself. Hence it matters more.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

The motor is fired up next and checked to confirm it runs correctly, all before we head off.

Unrun cars mostly mean a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Dogsthorpe Library, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## For Newark drivers, the short version
