# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Newhaven? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and the ignition too.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

The trouble starts once it's pulled through the pump — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Newhaven, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the engine has been run.

Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## Newhaven, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, take the keys away.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting BN9 9, or simply the name of a street nearby, so call from the spot.

Not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift your vehicle: the motor stays off.

- The ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start your fuel pump.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it's wasted.

- Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch up South Way.

- By the road, don't attempt emptying it yourself.

On a forecourt around Newhaven, whether it is the Sainsbury's or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the car clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it stands.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing inside an injection pump is made for this liquid — and none of that was meant to travel that way.

It does not blend. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel.

It drops, because it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the intake takes its supply from.

When the system runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it sits beneath the diesel, which is how a vehicle topped up in Peacehaven Heights yesterday and never started remains the simple one, provided no one touches your key.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the components it hits for as long as it remains there.

By daybreak, a vehicle parked in Newhaven with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; if it is only in your tank, nothing changes.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Texaco, and this problem is diluted fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is in your tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It cannot simply be run through, because it doesn't burn.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in South Heighton or the middle of Newhaven.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Wherever around East Sussex the car has come to rest, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue still inside the tank: the easiest part of a fuel system to clear.

## Newhaven: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind a single flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark.

It mostly occurs outside the house, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them.

Rushing, outside Harbour Primary and Nursery School, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone tops up your car.

Near South Coast Road, someone pours a container in on the drive after work.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up the car in dim light, parked in the car park by The Bridge.

Hired vehicles, brand-new motors, company vehicles, or the second car in a home with one of each: the least familiar cars get it most.

Anywhere across East Sussex, Newhaven included, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first response: leave it off.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Newhaven?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

Given any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed via the fuel filter and pipework.

Maybe returning from Newhaven Memorial Garden, or midway across Newhaven, your motor might run lumpy, smoke, lose pace, flash the dash or stall.

Once safe, pull over then switch it off — without restarting to test.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the M23, under 25 miles from Newhaven, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Newhaven to the car park by Newhaven Baptist Church is a very different job from a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop.

Permanent damage is very uncommon if it's spotted soon.

## Newhaven: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

A road by Elim Pentecostal Church, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever your vehicle has come to rest in Newhaven, our engineers travel to it.

What got in, about the quantity, plus whether your motor has been run: our technicians check before all else, because those shape the work.

Then that tank is drained where the car stands, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The last step is to bleed the system on clean diesel.

Then our technicians fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space outside Newhaven Town or a driveway around Newhaven.

The test before we go is that it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Because the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

## About Newhaven and where it is

Newhaven is a coastal town in East Sussex, situated on the shores of the English Channel at an elevation of around 19 metres. Newhaven sits near the mouth of the River Ouse, close to the South Downs National Park and within commuting distance of Brighton and Hove. Newhaven has a mix of housing types, with semi-detached homes being particularly prevalent, and is home to a population of approximately 11,397 people. Newhaven is also near several smaller communities, including Harbour Heights, Mount Pleasant, and Denton.

## AdBlue drains around Newhaven and across East Sussex

AdBlue call-outs around Newhaven are passed to vans that cover the places around it — Harbour Heights, Mount Pleasant plus Denton — and most of East Sussex further out, throughout BN postcodes.

Close to a boundary, or anywhere awkward to pin down? Checking is better than guessing, and so phone.

Newhaven is a coastal town, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it is, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Newhaven

No flat figure could be fair, since every job differs.

Three things shift the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether a van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight gap behind Newhaven Library.

Ahead of any quote, not after, each call from Newhaven opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the quantity, and whether the engine ran.

Their answers narrow the range right down to one number.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.

## In Newhaven and still alongside your car?

In that case, do nothing — that is the best move there is.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus whether the engine ran are everything our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest across East Sussex, Newhaven included.
