# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Newleaze

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

In Newleaze, finding it before the engine turns normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Not one liquid but two: that is what many modern diesels around Newleaze and Stoke Gifford run, with diesel feeding your engine.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two side by side under one flap.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Newleaze: how it occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Mackie Road, or heading home in the car park at Filton and District Social Club.

Unfamiliar cars are second, as well. Hire cars, new motors and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as easily, and once the pour begins, nothing stops it.

Northville or the middle of Newleaze: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Lockleaze or a forecourt in Newleaze.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask when you collect a rental or fleet car — from Filton Abbey Wood's car park, perhaps — not when the light appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — wherever it is around Gloucestershire — a simple routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Station Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look again — confirm the diesel filler stayed closed throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Step five is off limits.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Newleaze already?

Don't start the engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

Leave your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it alone starts your fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Sainsbury's or the Esso, ask the staff to help roll your car away from the pump.

Your own drive around Newleaze is the place it stays.

Where your engine has been run by now, stop safely and switch the vehicle off.

Come off the M32 — under 3 miles out of Newleaze — at the next junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing Newleaze is less a job than a run of under 5 miles to Bristol, so tell us.

## Newleaze: what happens when we turn up

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Shield Road Primary School, close to washing line or on your own driveway.

Both the work and the quote depend on three answers — what fluid, what amount, and if it's run — so our engineers ask.

That price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Then your tank is emptied and the system purged thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and nothing washes out on its own, however long it sits.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The motor is started next and checked to make sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians leave.

Unrun cars usually need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
