# Newtake: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where your vehicle sits in Newtake, is normally what it takes when caught before your engine runs.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of modern diesels in Buckland, as well as Newtake, run on two fluids; the motor takes just your diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It is in the gap that the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur in Newtake?

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Heath Park, or heading home in the car park outside The Barn Owl.

Unfamiliar cars come next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

It takes a few seconds, whether in Aller Park or right in the centre of Newtake.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Haccombe or a forecourt in Newtake.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Newton Abbot, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — wherever you are in Devon — a simple routine to use.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush beside Audley Rise at the roadside.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located the filler and read the cap.

- The two under a single flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel side stays closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Finish when that tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently using the own spout.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Step five stays out.

## Newtake: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Sainsbury's or the Harvest Energy, ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Newtake.

Already started? Pull over when it is sensible, then turn off.

On the M5, under 15 miles from Newtake, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Newtake is less work than a run of under 15 miles to Exeter, so say.

## Newtake: what occurs when we get there

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Haytor View Community Primary School, near Milbur Hillfort or on your own drive.

Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since those answers determine the work and our price.

During the call itself, you hear the quote — before anything else.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Testing comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

After that we start it and check it runs correctly before we go.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Newtake and Devon: AdBlue drains across the area

Milber and Penninn are among the towns near Newtake, a residential suburb, that the same teams cover, over TQ postcodes.

Quickest of all: quote a TQ12 4 postcode to the van.

The car stays put.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Ben Stedhams Wood, a side street close to St Lukes: our engineers drain it where it sits.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

## Newtake people: the short version

Pour no AdBlue till you've read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere in Devon, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave the vehicle off then phone 0333 366 0103.
