# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Newton Abbot: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done just where the vehicle stands around Newton Abbot, is normally all it takes when found before your engine runs.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many newer diesels around Wolborough, as well as Newton Abbot, run on two liquids; the engine gets just the diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying treats the gas.

There is a filler for each tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Newton Abbot

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Courtenay Street, perhaps at The Richard Hopkins on the way home after work.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and once the tip starts, no part halts it.

Whether it occurs in Knowles Hill or the middle of Newton Abbot, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Penninn or a forecourt in Newton Abbot, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside the fuel flap: many motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it is if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, anywhere across Devon, follow this routine.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine stopped, and not rushed by Queen Street on the verge.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you've located your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Never go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Newton Abbot?

Short order, then. Top of it: your motor stays unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

On a forecourt — Esso, another forecourt nearby or another — the staff will normally help roll your car away, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Newton Abbot.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M5, under 15 miles from Newton Abbot, that means the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Exeter, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Newton Abbot.

## What takes place when our engineers get there around Newton Abbot

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Wolborough Church of England Nursery and Primary School, near Newton Abbot Indoor Market or on your own drive.

The replies decide this work and our price, and so our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run.

No one heads out before you've heard our price by phone.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

Your engine is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians leave.

Unstarted vehicles mostly mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
