# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Newtown

Pause reading a minute if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your engine hasn't turned, it's drained and thoroughly cleaned where the car is around Newtown.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the why it occurs and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel feeds the motor — but plenty of current diesels driven round Newtown and Simms Cross carry a second liquid too.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on each tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in the gap that the error happens.

## Newtown: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Hutchinson Street before work, or in the car park outside The Doctors on the way home.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second factor: a strange car.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and after the tip begins, nothing stops it.

Whether it occurs in Widnes or the middle of Newtown, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Lower House or a forecourt around Newtown.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Runcorn, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Cheshire that is.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of John Collins Way.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look once more — confirm your diesel filler stayed closed throughout. After that, start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Newtown: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

Leave your ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it by itself runs the pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Esso, Lower House Lane Depot or another forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing your car away when asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Newtown.

When the motor has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then switch the vehicle off.

Come off the M62 — under 5 miles out of Newtown — at the first exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Liverpool, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Newtown.

## What takes place when our technicians arrive around Newtown

Wherever your car has stopped, be it outside St Gerard's Catholic Primary and Nursery School, near Old Pyrites Kilns or at home, the van comes to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because those replies settle this work and our quote.

Nobody sets off until you've had the price by phone.

Draining your tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. That is why it counts more.

After the filter is flushed — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel goes in, and then your car is tested.

The motor is started next and checked to confirm it runs correctly, all before our engineers leave.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our engineers get there, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.
