# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Norcross

Stop here for a moment if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

In Norcross, finding it before your engine runs normally means draining and a thorough flush on the spot.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the why it happens and the how to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

No single liquid but two: that is how many modern diesels around Norcross and Breedy Butts carry, with diesel for the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both side by side behind one flap.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It is in that gap that the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Norcross

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Norcross Lane before work, or in the car park at Castle Gardens on the way home.

New-to-you cars come next, too. Rentals, new cars and company motors place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once started, keeps on.

Whether it occurs in Whiteholme or the middle of Norcross, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Anchorsholme or a forecourt in Norcross.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Poulton-Le-Fylde? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

For the day the light comes on — anywhere you are across Lancashire — a routine to use.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Easington Fell Road.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — after you've found the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Step five is out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Norcross?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Leave the ignition off too, since on many diesels it by itself runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Morrisons or the BP, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump.

Your own driveway around Norcross is where it should stay.

Already run? Stop when it is sensible, then turn off.

Norcross sits under 5 miles from the M55; there, take the first junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Preston, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Norcross.

## When our technicians get there around Norcross, what occurs?

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Kincraig Primary School, close to Sevenoaks Community Centre or on your own driveway.

What fluid went in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask because those replies decide the work and quote.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away by itself. That is why it counts more.

Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

The engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers leave.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
