# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Normoss? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and the ignition as well.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

The harm begins once it's pulled through the pump — it won't ignite, and it will not blend with diesel.

In Normoss, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your motor runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Normoss, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

- Pocket the keys, and that prevents someone turning the power on.

- Put the hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Give us a postcode starting FY3 8, or whatever street lies closest, and the van finds you directly — so ring wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

- Moving the vehicle just a short way is no reason to start the motor.

- Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start the pump.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch up Conway Avenue.

- Draining that tank yourself by the road isn't worth trying.

The attendants working at any Normoss forecourt — the Gulf included — will normally lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the gas.

A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps separate rather than mixing — quite unlike fuel.

It sinks, since it is heavier than diesel, and pools down where the pickup draws its fuel from.

Once your system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it waits beneath the diesel, and that is how a vehicle filled in Little Layton yesterday and never switched on remains the simple case, as long as nobody turns the key.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the components it gets to for as long as it stays there.

Overnight, a vehicle parked around Normoss with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is only inside the tank, it doesn't.

The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more major than petrol

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Texaco.

Damage just comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and sitting in the tank, it does nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid.

Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

It does not stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Highfurlong or the middle of Normoss.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Not run? Then the AdBlue sits just in the tank, the simplest section of the entire system to clear, anywhere the vehicle has stopped around Lancashire.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Normoss?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors sits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle picked up when driving home and tipped in at home, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical story.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Boundary Primary School.

Close to Normoss Road, someone pours a container in on that drive in the evening.

Or the car is topped up in the car park at Newton Arms, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

The least familiar vehicles see it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet cars, and the other motor in a family with one of each fuel types.

Same slip, same first response — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Normoss or the remainder of Lancashire.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Normoss?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, having passed through the filter and lines.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each may appear, perhaps part way across Normoss or coming back from Boundary Park.

When safe, pull over then switch it off — with no restarting to see.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Normoss lies under 3 miles from the M55; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and stop safely instead of driving on.

Mileage matters: every mile carries the AdBlue further in, and so heading for Preston, under 15 miles away, gives a far larger job than hopping across Normoss to the car park by Horsebridge Community Centre.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There is more to flush once the engine has been run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

If it's caught soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## Normoss: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Anywhere it has stopped around Normoss — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a road by @thegrange — our van travels to the vehicle.

Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if your engine has run, since those answers settle the work.

On the spot, that tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once.

A careful flush matters far more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not clear out on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no fault, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

The final step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel.

Then we start the car and you drive off, whether from a parking bay at Layton or a drive around Normoss.

Before we go, our technicians make sure it is running correctly with new diesel in.

As the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## About Normoss and where it is

Normoss is a coastal suburban area in Lancashire, situated near the cities of Preston and Blackpool. Normoss has a relatively low elevation of 15 metres above sea level and is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock. Normoss is located near other local places such as Newton and High Cross, and is approximately 13 miles from Preston. Normoss is also within a larger residential area that includes Little Carleton.

## AdBlue drains across Lancashire, Normoss included

Throughout the FY postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue call-outs in Normoss serve much of Lancashire too, Newton, High Cross and Little Carleton included.

Phone and ask rather than guess if you are close to a county line, or somewhere tricky to explain.

No moving is needed. In Normoss, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: the car is drained where it stands, be it in a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Normoss?

Not one single figure would be fair, because each job is different.

The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Christ The King.

Which fluid was put in, what quantity, and whether it ran: every Normoss enquiry opens by asking precisely those, ahead of any quote, never after.

Once those are answered, a range becomes a single firm number.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.

## Normoss: still beside your car?

Then, do nothing — that is the best move there is.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Tell us it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Normoss or wherever in Lancashire.
