# North Bersted: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the engine hasn't turned, it is emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle sits around North Bersted.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels on the roads round North Bersted and Colworth carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think what filler it needs.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in North Bersted?

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Ashurst Close before work, or in the car park at The Royal Oak on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and if it is gone, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on.

Whether it occurs in Elbridge or the middle of North Bersted, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a North Bersted forecourt or a drive out in Aldwick, take a few seconds on these before anything goes in.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside your diesel filler? Then check beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Bognor Regis.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — anywhere it is across West Sussex — a simple routine to follow.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Chichester Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Stage five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in North Bersted?

Brief list, then. First: your motor stays unstarted.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Esso, the Tesco or somewhere else.

If you're on your own drive in North Bersted, leave it where it is.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

North Bersted lies under 15 miles from the Waterlooville Bypass; on it, use the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Chichester, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across North Bersted.

## North Bersted: what occurs when our technicians get there

Wherever your car came to rest, whether outside Bartons Primary School, Bognor Regis, beside Holy Cross Church or at home, our van comes to it.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask since the answers set both work and quote.

No one sets off before you have heard our price by phone.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run need about half an hour after we arrive.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.

Quickest of all: give a PO21 5 postcode for the van.

Moving the vehicle is not needed.

Wherever it stands — near Bersted Jubilee Hall., on a lay-by heading to Jubilee Recreation Ground, at home — that's where it gets cleared.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Bognor Regis Youth & Community Centre? Close to a border? Asking is better than guessing, and so phone.
