# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in North End? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave your motor off then leave your ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in.

Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around North End.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## North End, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Tell us a postcode starting BS49 4, or whatever street lies closest, and our van finds you straight — so ring wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Moving the car even a few yards is no reason to start the engine.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start the pump.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short distance up North End Road.

- Beside the road, don't try draining it on your own.

Get the attendants to help you roll your vehicle away from the island if you are on a forecourt in North End, whether it's the Esso or somewhere else.

On that drive, the car remains just where it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your motor.

From a separate tank it goes directly to the exhaust, cleaning what the engine emits.

No part inside an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of that was meant to travel that way.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

It drops, because it's denser than diesel, and settles down where the pickup draws its fuel from.

A motor filled on a drive in Yatton overnight and left unstarted is the simple one. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but when your engine runs, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the parts it hits for as long as it remains there.

A vehicle left sitting around North End with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Tesco and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Mixed into the diesel and left unused, it's harmless at that stage; using your engine is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It does not burn, so it can't just be run through.

Deposits and corrosion remain through the next tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of the diesel, and so thinning it won't help. Hence the flush counts more, and trying the engine "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Kenn Moor Gate or the centre of North End equally.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Clearing a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever around Somerset the car sits.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around North End

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap — can look the same. No one means it; many designs allow it.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

Rushing, outside Chestnut Park Primary, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off North End.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside Bridge Inn, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up the most in a rental, a new motor, a fleet vehicle, or the other car of a family with one of each fuel types — the cars drivers use the least.

Anywhere in Somerset, North End as well, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: keep it off.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in North End?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

Through your filter, along the pipework, and — with any running time — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a stall — returning from Wemberham Little Wood, perhaps, or part way across North End.

Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Leave the car off instead of restarting it to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M5, under a mile from North End, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

Distance matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, and so heading for Bristol, under 15 miles away, gives a far larger job than crossing North End to the car park by Model aircraft airfield.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

We do all of the rinsing where the vehicle has stopped, and once the motor has been run there is more of it.

Very seldom does it leave permanent damage when it's noticed early.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around North End: what it takes

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped around North End: a side street close to All Saints, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

What went in, roughly how much, and if your motor has been run: our technicians ask first, since those decide the job.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together when your tank is drained, right there.

Your system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

A test of the vehicle comes last, once clean diesel is added and your filter gets flushed or, if necessary, replaced.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we arrive, if the engine has not run.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming the fuel system with clean diesel comes at the end.

Starting the engine comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, at Yatton or on a drive around North End.

The test before our technicians head off is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Because the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About North End and where it is

North End is a small village in Somerset, situated on the coast near the mouth of the River Yeo. North End has a low elevation of around 7 metres, and its coastal setting influences the local environment. North End is located near several other small villages, including Horsecastle and Kingston Seymour, and is within commuting distance of Bristol.

## AdBlue drains around North End and across Somerset

Over the BS postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue call-outs around North End serve most of Somerset as well, Horsecastle, Kingston Seymour and Kenn among them.

Close to a border, or anywhere tricky to pin down? Checking beats assuming, and so ring.

A mobile service fits North End, a coastal village: you have no need to bring the car to us, since our engineers empty it on the spot, in a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## North End: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the jobs differ, a single price wouldn't be honest.

What changes the cost is, first of all, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Kingston Seymour Village Hall.

What was put in, what quantity, and whether the engine ran: each North End enquiry opens by asking precisely those, ahead of any quote, not afterwards.

Their answers shrink a range right down to a single number.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

While the van is on the way, check your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.

## In North End and still alongside your car?

In that case, do nothing — that's the best step there is.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in North End or anywhere in Somerset.
