# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in North Motherwell? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your engine off and keep the ignition off.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Being water-based, it will not burn and never combines with diesel; trouble only comes when your pump begins drawing it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in North Motherwell, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has run.

Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around North Motherwell: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, take your keys away.

- Near moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, so do not throw it away.

- Ring right where you are. Say a ML1 3 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Do not:

- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to move the car.

- Plenty of diesels power their pump the instant the ignition comes on, and so keep the vehicle off.

- Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.

- Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch along Chesters Crescent.

- Emptying your tank on your own by the road is not worth trying.

Moving your car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever North Motherwell forecourt you're on, the JET or any other.

At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine.

Kept in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases.

Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the very spot the pickup sucks from.

A vehicle topped up on a drive in Milnwood overnight and left unstarted is the simple case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up yet — but once the engine turns, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny channels; and, because it attacks some metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside.

If the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it overnight in North Motherwell leaves things worse. In that tank only, time does nothing.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel running past them, and so the water part damages them in its own right.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the main fault.

Blended through your diesel and sitting still, it's no threat at that stage; running the engine does the damage.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid.

It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through.

Whether the vehicle sits in Orbiston or the centre of North Motherwell, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts for more. Why: it will not stay blended, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the next fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around North Lanarkshire the car is sitting.

## North Motherwell: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors rests right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A container picked up when driving home and poured in outside the house, instead of at the forecourt, is the usual story.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the refill is hurried.

Near Angus Avenue, a driver pours a container in at home in the evening.

Another version: dim light, a pub car park by The Brass Button, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

It crops up most in a hire car, a new car, a fleet car, or the spare motor in a family with both fuel types — the cars people know the least.

An identical mistake, an identical first response — leave it off — wherever you are around North Motherwell or the remainder of North Lanarkshire.

## North Motherwell: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank.

Through your filter, along the lines, and — with any running time — on to the injection pump and each injector: that is where it travels.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, falling power, warnings on the dash, or a cut-out — returning from Fort-Colline, perhaps, or part way across North Motherwell.

No starting it again to check: pull over once it is safe, then turn it off.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M74, under a mile from North Motherwell, by the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Distance matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system, and so heading for Glasgow, under 15 miles away, gives a much larger job than hopping across North Motherwell to the car park by Pat Cullinan Community Centre.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop.

Noticed soon, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around North Motherwell: what it takes

Anywhere it has come to rest around North Motherwell — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a street by St Bernadette's — the van travels to the vehicle.

Before anything else we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has been run, since those answers decide this work.

Next, draining that tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is flushed all the way through because residue will not wash out by itself.

Testing the car comes last, once fresh diesel goes in and the fuel filter gets cleaned or, where needed, swapped.

Not run? Then count on about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming your system with fresh diesel comes last.

You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway in North Motherwell or in a bay outside Motherwell.

Before we leave, we make sure it's running correctly with fresh diesel in.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

A mobile service suits North Motherwell, a residential suburb: you have no need to take the vehicle to us, because we empty it there, in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## North Motherwell: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one single price would be fair, since every job is different.

What changes the cost is, first, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where your car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Calvary.

Before a quote, not afterwards, each enquiry from North Motherwell begins with three checks: the fuel, the amount, and whether the engine ran.

When those are answered, a range turns into a single firm number.

Before anyone sets off, you hear the quote on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Look at your insurance while we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
