# North Scarle: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Leave your motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Normally, if the engine has not turned, it is emptied and fully purged where the vehicle is around North Scarle.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels on the roads around North Scarle and Girton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to clean it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of cars share a single flap for both, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around North Scarle: how it happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Chapel Lane before work, or in the car park outside White Hart on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second thing: an unfamiliar motor.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once started, carries on.

It's a few seconds, whether in Eagle Hall or bang in the heart of North Scarle.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Eagle or a forecourt in North Scarle, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it next to your diesel inlet? In that case check below the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Swinderby? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Lincolnshire that is.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and not rushed by School Lane at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then check once more — confirm the diesel filler stayed shut throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around North Scarle already?

Brief list, then. First: your motor remains unstarted.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, BP or any other — the attendants will normally help roll your car away, when you ask.

If you are on your own driveway in North Scarle, leave it where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

On the Doncaster By-Pass, under 25 miles from North Scarle, that means the next junction.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across North Scarle makes a smaller job than driving under 10 miles to Lincoln — so say about how far it went.

## North Scarle: what happens when our technicians arrive

By North Scarle Primary School, close to All Saints, North Scarle or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

What fluid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since those replies set the work and quote.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

A test comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
