# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in North Shields

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around North Shields.

Reading in advance? Then what follows explains why it happens and how to stop it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel feeds the engine — yet plenty of newer diesels seen round North Shields and Tynemouth carry another liquid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around North Shields: how it occurs

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Norfolk Street before work, or in the car park at The New Exchange on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after begun, keeps on.

Whether it takes place in The Lawe or the middle of North Shields, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Meadow Well or a forecourt in North Shields, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Brockley Whins, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, anywhere around Tyne and Wear, follow this routine.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Saville Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around North Shields?

Brief list, then. Top of it: the engine stays off.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help push the car away from the pump.

At home around North Shields? So the vehicle stays where it is.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the A194(M), under 10 miles from North Shields, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing North Shields is less work than a run of under 10 miles towards Newcastle upon Tyne, and so tell us.

## North Shields: what occurs when our engineers get there

The van reaches the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near Salvation Army, or by Christ Church CofE Primary School.

Those replies determine this work and the price, and so we ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

Then we fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we go.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor has not run need about half an hour once we arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## About North Shields itself

North Shields is a suburban area located on the north bank of the River Tyne in north-east England, with a mix of residential and commercial properties. North Shields sits at an elevation of 31 metres, close to the mouth of the Tyne and the North Sea coast. North Shields is part of the larger Tyneside conurbation, near the city of Newcastle upon Tyne and other nearby places like South Shields and Preston. North Shields has a population of around 7121 people, predominantly living in flats.

## North Shields and Tyne and Wear: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a residential suburb, North Shields has the same vans as nearby areas — South Shields, Preston — all the way through NE postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

Our van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting NE30 1.

Your car does not need to shift.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Christ Chapel, a lay-by on the way to Northumberland Square, a driveway.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of St Columba's? Close to a border? Checking beats assuming, so phone.

## In short, for North Shields motorists

Pour no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere in Tyne and Wear, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — and so leave the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103.
