# Northam: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop here for a moment when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, done just where the car sits around Northam, is normally all it needs when found before the motor runs.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the reasons it happens and the ways to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads around Northam and Newtown carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of motors have a single flap for the two, while others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on each forecourt visit, again and again.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

It's in that gap that the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Northam: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up together.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and letting it run dry means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off William Street, perhaps outside Browns on the way home that evening.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second thing: an unfamiliar car.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, keeps on.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Bitterne Manor or right in the centre of Northam.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Chapel or a forecourt in Northam, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Bitterne, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere across Hampshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of York Close.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've located your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Stop once your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip slowly using the built-in spout.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Northam?

Brief order, then. Top of it: your motor remains unstarted.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the BP, ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Northam.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next exit means where to leave when you are on the M27, under 3 miles from Northam.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Northam is less a job than a run of under a mile to Southampton, so say.

## What takes place when our engineers arrive in Northam

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside River Church, or outside Mount Pleasant Infants.

Both the work and the quote rest on three answers — which fluid, which amount, and if it's run — so our engineers ask.

The quote comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and none of it washes away on its own, however long it is left.

A test comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed as needed.

Your engine is started next and checked to make sure it runs smoothly, all before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after we arrive, as long as the engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## About Northam and where it is

Northam is a coastal suburban area in Hampshire, situated near the city of Southampton. Northam lies at a low elevation of around 2 metres, close to the shores of the Southampton Water. Northam is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing and is located near other suburban areas such as Bitterne Manor and Peartree Green.

## AdBlue drains in Northam and across Hampshire

Nichols Town and Peartree Green are among the towns around Northam, a residential suburb, that the same vans cover, throughout SO postcodes.

Quote a postcode that starts SO14 5, and the van arrives fastest.

Your car doesn't need to move.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Northam Methodist Church, a lay-by on the way to Clovelly Road Community Garden, a drive.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Vedic Society Hindu Temple.

## In short, for Northam motorists

Always, the cap; then, the pour.

Even so AdBlue in your diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can drain it where it is, wherever in Hampshire: switch the car off then phone 0333 366 0103.
