# Norton Bridge: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop reading a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Around Norton Bridge, finding it before the motor runs normally means draining and a full flush where it stands.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels around Yarnfield, like those in Norton Bridge, run on two liquids; the motor takes just your diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the gas.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which filler it needs.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Norton Bridge: how it occurs

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Smithy Lane, or at The Railway Inn on the way home after work.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as easily, and once the pour starts, no part halts it.

Shallowford or the middle of Norton Bridge: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Coldmeece or a forecourt in Norton Bridge.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it lives when the filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside the nearest station? Ask the person who drove it last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere around Staffordshire, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Stone Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Finish once your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently using its own spout.

- Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Norton Bridge?

Brief list, then. Top of it: your engine stays unstarted.

Leave the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts the pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, right where fuel is taken from.

The staff at BP, Esso or another forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the car clear if you ask.

Your own drive around Norton Bridge is the place it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

On the M6, under 3 miles from Norton Bridge, that means the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Norton Bridge is less a job than a trip of under 15 miles towards Stoke-on-Trent, and so say.

## Our arrival in Norton Bridge, and what happens next

Anywhere your car has stopped, whether outside Springfields First School, near St Luke's or at home, our van comes to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run, since the answers settle the work and the price.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

After that we start the engine and confirm it runs smoothly before we go.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## Norton Bridge and Staffordshire: AdBlue drains across the area

As a village, Norton Bridge shares its vans nearby areas — Chebsey, Cold Norton — right through ST postcodes and the wider area around them.

Quote a postcode that starts ST15 0, and the van gets there fastest.

The vehicle does not need to move.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Stone Golf Centre, a side street close to Izaak Walton's Cottage: our engineers drain the car where it sits.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Chebsey Parish Hall, ring and ask instead of guessing.
