# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Notting Hill

Leave the engine and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Normally, if the engine has not turned, it's drained and thoroughly cleaned where your car sits in Notting Hill.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it occurs and the ways to prevent it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

No single liquid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels around Notting Hill and White City carry, with diesel feeding your engine.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to clean it, from its own tank.

There is a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel gets filled on each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think what cap it needs.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## Notting Hill: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Stanley Crescent, or outside Earl of Lonsdale on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second thing: a new car.

No part stops the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

North Kensington or the middle of Notting Hill: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Westbourne Green or a forecourt around Notting Hill, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors mark what goes in which filler just there.

- Can't see it next to the diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Shepherds Bush.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, anywhere in Greater London, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Lansdowne Crescent, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look again — making sure your diesel filler stayed shut throughout. After that, start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is off limits.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Notting Hill?

Do not start your engine: that's how the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Power, the Shell or somewhere else.

Your own driveway in Notting Hill is where it stays.

Where your engine has run already, stop safely and switch it off.

On the M4, under 5 miles from Notting Hill, that means the next junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Notting Hill is less work than a trip of under 5 miles towards Westminster, and so tell us.

## What takes place when our technicians turn up in Notting Hill

The van comes to the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Daniel Benjamin Gallery, or by Colville Primary School.

The answers decide this work and our quote, and so our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

Nobody sets off before you've heard the price over the phone.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

The van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting W11 2.

The vehicle stays where it is.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Arundel and Ladbroke Gardens, a side street close to Sir William Ramsay: our engineers drain the car where it is.

Guessing doesn't help at the back of Howard Staunton, close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and ask.

## In short, for Notting Hill people

First, the cap; after that, the pour.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave the car off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it sits, anywhere across Greater London.
