# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Nottingham

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave your engine off then keep your ignition off.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the fuel system draws it in.

If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully cleaned where the car stands around Nottingham.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Nottingham

Do these:

- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.

- The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting NG1 5, or just the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the car.

Things not to do:

- No starting your motor — not for a second, not to shift the car.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run the fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.

- Leave the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way along South Sherwood Street.

- Do not try to drain it yourself by the kerbside.

Rolling the car away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Nottingham forecourt you are on, the Shell included.

At home, the vehicle stays just where it was left.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than blending — entirely unlike fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the same spot the intake sucks from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in St Anns last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and tiny channels; meanwhile, because it attacks certain metals, every part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it stays in there.

If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight in Nottingham leaves things worse. In that tank alone, time costs nothing.

Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water offers no lubrication, which is a separate kind of harm.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Sainsbury's and you have an issue of thin fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside the tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Whether your car sits in Sneinton or the centre of Nottingham, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, and so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere around Nottinghamshire the car has stopped.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Nottingham?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars waits right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle picked up while driving home and poured in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

Rushing, outside Huntingdon Academy, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up your car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Burton Street.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up the car after dark, parked in the car park by Yarn.

It takes place most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Anywhere across Nottinghamshire, Nottingham as well, the slip does not change, and neither does the first response: leave it off.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Nottingham?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Through the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — with any running time — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

Watch for rough running, smoke, falling power, warnings on the dash, or a cut-out — returning from University Hall Garden, say, or part way across Nottingham.

When you safely can, stop then turn it off — with no restarting to see.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M1, under 5 miles from Nottingham, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Nottingham to the car park by Charlie Bartle (1911 - 1996) is a very different job from a run towards Derby, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

We do all of the cleaning where your car has come to a stop, and once the engine has been run there is more of it.

Spotted early, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Nottingham: what it takes

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Nottingham: a side street near Royal Concert Hall, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

What got in, about how much, plus if the motor has turned over: our engineers check first, since those decide the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one after your tank is emptied, right there.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through since residue won't flush away unaided.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Engine not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Lastly, the system is bled with fresh diesel.

You head off as soon as we have started it, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway around Nottingham or in a space outside the nearest station.

It is tested on clean diesel to make sure it runs correctly before our technicians go.

No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there.

At the end, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## About Nottingham and where it is

Nottingham is a city situated in the East Midlands region of England, notable for its rich history and cultural significance. Located inland, it is positioned near major cities such as Sheffield and Birmingham. The city has a strong association with various industries, including lace-making and bicycle manufacturing, and is also famous for its connection to the legend of Robin Hood. Nottingham boasts a prestigious literary status, recognised by UNESCO.

## AdBlue drains across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire

AdBlue call-outs in Nottingham are passed to teams that serve the towns around it — Standard Hill, The Park as well as Lace Market — and most of Nottinghamshire further out, across NG postcodes.

Close to a border, or somewhere tricky to explain? Checking is better than guessing, and so ring.

Anywhere your vehicle stands — a drive at home, a side street, a car park, a filling station — we empty it there, and there's no need to take it to us; which suits Nottingham, a city, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Nottingham: the cost of fixing it

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where your car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind Vue Cinema.

That's why each call from Nottingham starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run.

With those replies, a range shrinks to one firm number.

The quote is given on the call, before a van leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

Look at your insurance while we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Nottingham: still alongside your car?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, then, the most useful thing open to you.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Nottingham or anywhere across Nottinghamshire.
