# Nutburn: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, keep your ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

In Nutburn, finding it before your motor runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads around Nutburn and Whitenap carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling your diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

It is in the gap that the mistake happens.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Nutburn: how it happens

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Nutburn Meadows before work, or in the car park at Bedes Lea on the way home.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Nutburn or out in North Baddesley.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Nutburn or a drive over in Halterworth. Seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask as you collect a rental or fleet car — at Chandlers Ford's car park, perhaps — not once the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere around Hampshire, use this routine.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not rushed beside Knights Meadows at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The two under a single flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel filler stays closed before raising the bottle.

- Stop once the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently through the built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Nutburn already?

Short order, then. First: your motor remains off.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the base rather than blending — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — BP, Kingslake Cars or any other — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle clear, when you ask.

On your own drive around Nutburn? Then the car stays where it is.

Already started? Stop once it's sensible, then switch off.

Leave the M27 — under 3 miles out of Nutburn — at the next junction.

A short hop across Nutburn is a smaller job than a run towards Southampton, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Nutburn: what occurs when we turn up

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside North Baddesley Infant School, close to North Baddesley Village Hall or on your own driveway.

Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because those replies settle this work and the quote.

That price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test is last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

We don't go until it has been started and is running properly.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
