# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Oakley

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep the motor off and keep the ignition off.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing starts till the engine pulls it through.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle sits in Oakley.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Oakley, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

- Pocket the keys, which prevents anyone switching the electrics on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so don't bin it away.

- The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting MK43 7, or just the name of a street close by, so phone from the spot.

Never:

- Don't start your motor, even for a moment to move the vehicle.

- The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your fuel pump.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, so it's wasted.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way up Farsands.

- Emptying your tank yourself beside the road isn't worth trying.

Rolling the car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Oakley forecourt you are on, the BP included.

On your own drive, do not touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It does not combine. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

A motor filled on a drive in Pavenham yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the straightforward one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up yet — but when the engine runs, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there.

If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight around Oakley makes it worse. In the tank alone, time does nothing.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water content harms them by itself.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger fault?

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Sainsbury's, and the issue is diluted fuel.

No damage comes while it stays put, mixed into the diesel — only once the engine works on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Whether your vehicle sits in Bromham or the heart of Oakley, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other error, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

As with petrol, there's good news.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Bedfordshire your car is sitting.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Oakley

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors sits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

The top-up is hurried outside Oakley Primary Academy, because your dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken in.

A driver tips the container in outside their house, right off High Street, as the day ends.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside The Bedford Arms, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It happens most in the motors motorists know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Same mistake, an identical first response — keep it switched off — anywhere you happen to be in Oakley or the rest of Bedfordshire.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Oakley?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank.

Through the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — given any running — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is how far it has gone.

Maybe coming back from Fox Covert, or midway across Oakley, your engine may run rough, smoke, lose pace, light up the dash or stall.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Oakley sits under 15 miles from the M1; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop safely rather than driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Oakley to the car park by Oakley Methodist Church is a very different job from a run towards Milton Keynes, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop.

Spotted quickly, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Oakley

A road by Oakley Village Hall, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever your car has stopped around Oakley, we travel to it.

Before anything else we ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run, since those replies settle this work.

Then that tank is cleared where your car sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash away by itself, so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts far more here than for petrol.

Testing your car comes at the end, once clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter gets cleaned or, if necessary, swapped.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your engine hasn't run.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

New diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the last step.

Whether it is a parking bay by Bedford or a driveway in Oakley, that is where our engineers start it and you drive off.

The test before our engineers leave is that it runs correctly on new diesel.

The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

Throughout the MK postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue jobs around Oakley serve much of Bedfordshire too, Stevington, Milton Ernest and Clapham included.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Oakley is a village, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Oakley

No flat price would be fair, because each job differs.

The price changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Oakley Memorial.

That's why every call from Oakley starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

With them, the range narrows to one fixed figure.

Before a van sets off, you hear our price by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
