# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Oakley: How It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Pause reading a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

In Oakley, catching it before your engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

Reading in advance? In that case what follows explains why it comes about and what to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that's how many newer diesels around Oakley and Fairview carry, with diesel for the engine.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what filler to use.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Oakley: how it occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Burma Avenue before work, or in the car park at Hewlett Arms on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: a strange motor.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, carries on.

Whether it occurs in Lynworth or the middle of Oakley, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Cleevemount or a forecourt in Oakley.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- On many cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to the diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Cheltenham Spa.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Gloucestershire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Priors Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, then check again — making sure your diesel filler stayed shut throughout. Only then, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Skip step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Oakley?

Do not start your engine: that's where the short order of things starts.

Leave your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself runs the pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Sainsbury's, Bouncers Lane Service Station or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push your car away if you ask.

On your own drive in Oakley? Then the car remains where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

On the M5, under 5 miles from Oakley, that means the next exit.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Oakley is a smaller job than driving under 10 miles to Gloucester — so say about how far it went.

## When we turn up around Oakley, what happens?

By Oakwood Primary School, close to Oakley Community Resource Centre or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because those replies determine the work and our price.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody sets off.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Your engine is started next and tested to make sure it runs smoothly, all before our engineers head off.

Unstarted vehicles mostly mean a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

## AdBlue drains in Oakley and across Gloucestershire

Over GL postcodes, our teams covering Oakley — a residential suburb — work the nearby spots too, Whaddon and Battledown among them.

A postcode starting GL52 5 gets the van to you fastest.

The car doesn't need to move.

Anywhere it stands — beside Whaddon Youth Centre, in a layby heading to Priors Farm Playing Field, at home — that's where it is drained.

Guessing doesn't help at the back of St Michael's, on a border, or somewhere hard to pin down; ring and check.

## The short version for Oakley drivers

Before you pour, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere in Gloucestershire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — so leave the vehicle off and ring 0333 366 0103.
