# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Oakmere: Why It Happens

Leave the motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Usually, when the engine hasn't run, it's emptied and fully cleaned where your car is in Oakmere.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel goes to your engine — but plenty of newer diesels driven around Oakmere and Norley carry another liquid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

There's a filler on each tank.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have both together under one flap.

Diesel gets filled on each filling station visit, again and again.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Oakmere: how it happens

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Chester Road, or on the way home in the car park outside Vale Royal Abbey Arms.

New-to-you motors come next, too. Rentals, new motors and company cars put their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

No part halts the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it occurs in Crabtree Green or the middle of Oakmere, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Oakmere or a drive out in Hatchmere. Seconds, that's all.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Check when you pick up a hire car or company car — from Delamere's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever across Cheshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Waste Lane, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- The two behind one flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel side is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Finish when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour slowly using the built-in spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel filler? That's where you stop.

Skip stage five altogether.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Oakmere?

Do not start the motor: that's how the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump if you are on a forecourt — the Shell, the Murco or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Oakmere.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

Oakmere sits under 10 miles from the M56; on it, use the first exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Chester, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Oakmere.

## Oakmere: what takes place when we get there

The van comes to the car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, near Delamere Community Centre, or by Delamere CofE Primary Academy.

Which fluid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask because the replies set the work and quote.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone heads out.

Draining the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

After your filter has been cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel is added, and then your vehicle gets tested.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

## Oakmere and Cheshire: AdBlue drains across the area

As a rural hamlet, Oakmere has the same vans as nearby places — Delamere, Stonyford — right across CW postcodes and the wider area around them.

Fastest of all: give a CW8 2 postcode for our van.

There's no need to move the car.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Oakmere Methodist Church, a lay-by on the way to Bowyers Waste, a driveway.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Saint Peter's Church Delamere? By a county line? Checking is better than assuming, and so phone.

## For Oakmere motorists, the short version

Pour no AdBlue till you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave the vehicle off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it waits, anywhere around Cheshire.
