# Oakworth: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the engine hasn't turned, it is emptied and fully flushed where your car sits in Oakworth.

The remainder of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels in Bogthorn, as well as Oakworth, run on two liquids; your motor gets only the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both together under one flap.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## Oakworth: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

On a drive off Keighley Road before work, or in the car park outside The Snooty Fox on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part halts the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Dockroyd or the middle of Oakworth, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Whether a Oakworth forecourt or a drive over in Harewood Hill, take a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — plenty of motors mark which goes in each inlet just there.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Keighley.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across West Yorkshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Chapel Lane, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Oakworth?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — Shell, another forecourt nearby or another — the staff will normally help push your car away, if you ask.

Your own drive in Oakworth is where it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next junction is where to leave if you are on the M606, under 10 miles from Oakworth.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Oakworth.

## What occurs when our technicians arrive in Oakworth

Wherever the car came to rest, be it outside Oakworth Primary School, beside Oakworth Village Hall or at home, our van travels to it.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because those replies set both work and price.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

Then the tank is drained and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and none of it washes out unaided, however long it sits.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We do not go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run need about half an hour after we arrive.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.

## AdBlue drains across West Yorkshire, Oakworth included

Being a village, Oakworth has the same vans as surrounding places — Mytholmes, Cackleshaw — all the way across BD postcodes and the wider area around them.

Quote a postcode that starts BD22 7, and our van arrives quickest.

The car remains where it is.

The drain happens on the spot, be it a drive, a road by Christ Church, Oakworth, or a lay-by towards Holden Park.

Guessing doesn't help behind Our Lady of Lourdes, on a border, or anywhere awkward to describe; phone and check.

## For Oakworth people, the short version

Tip no AdBlue until you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere around West Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — so leave the vehicle off and ring 0333 366 0103.
