# Ochtrelure: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and the ignition as well.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

As it is water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts once the pump starts pulling it.

If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully purged where the vehicle sits in Ochtrelure.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps right now, Ochtrelure: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

- Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.

- Put your hazards on if you are anywhere close to moving traffic.

- Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- Ring just where you are. Say a DG9 7 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Never do these:

- No starting the engine — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.

- Turning your key to ignition alone starts your pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short stretch down Birch Close is too far to drive the vehicle.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

Get the attendants to help you roll the vehicle off the pumps if you are at a forecourt around Ochtrelure, whether it is the Solo or elsewhere.

If you are on your own drive, leave the car just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

It doesn't blend. Once it's poured into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the very place the pickup draws from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Culhorn last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

It attacks certain metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it reaches until it's removed from the system. And once the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny channels.

A vehicle left sitting in Ochtrelure with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, and that is a second form of damage.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

An issue of thin fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol at the Morrisons.

No damage comes while it stays put, blended into your diesel — only when the motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It cannot simply be run through, since it does not burn.

Deposits and corrosion stay through the next tankful, and AdBlue splits back from the diesel, and so thinning it can't work. That is why the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Sheuchan Parks or the centre of Ochtrelure equally.

As with petrol, there's good news.

If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Dumfries and Galloway the vehicle is sitting.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Ochtrelure: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors rests right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It usually happens outside the house, from a container bought on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the top-up is hurried.

Close to Pinewood Gardens, a driver pours a bottle in on that drive after work.

Else, after dark outside The Railway Inn, your car gets refilled by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

The least known cars see it the most — hire cars, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the spare motor of a family with both fuels.

Same mistake, same first response — leave it switched off — wherever you happen to be around Ochtrelure or the remainder of Dumfries and Galloway.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Ochtrelure?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank.

The filter and pipework have had it pulled along, and some running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Dick's Hill Park, perhaps, or midway across Ochtrelure.

Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep the car off rather than restarting it to check.

Every start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M77, over 50 miles from Ochtrelure, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system. That's why a hop across Ochtrelure to park beside Ryan Centre and a drive of under 50 miles for Belfast are very different jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once your engine has been started.

When it is noticed quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

## Ochtrelure: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Wherever it has stopped in Ochtrelure — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a road by War Memorial — our van comes to the car.

The job depends on three replies, and our technicians get before all else — what went in, the amount, and if the motor has turned over.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed right through since residue will not flush out by itself.

After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or replaced if it has to be. After that fresh diesel, then a check of the car.

Engine not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

New diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the last step.

Then we start it and you set off, whether from a parking bay at Stranraer or a driveway in Ochtrelure.

We check it runs smoothly on new diesel before leaving.

No garage is needed at any point, with the entire job done then and there.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Ochtrelure: the cost of fixing it

There's no fair single quote, since the jobs aren't the same.

The price moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Saint Joseph's RC Church.

Which fluid was put in, what quantity, plus if the engine ran: each Ochtrelure enquiry opens by asking exactly those, ahead of any quote, never afterwards.

Given them, a range narrows to a single firm number.

Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

As the van is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
